Customer and Energy Charges by Rate Component
Residential electricity rates include separate customer and energy charges. The distribution charge is the largest component, at 142.33¢ per day plus 9.10¢ per kWh. The transmission charge is 4.67¢ per kWh with no daily customer charge, while the service charge is 27.19¢ per day with no energy charge.
Small General Electric Rates
Customer, Demand, and Energy Charges by Rate Component
Small general service electricity rates include daily customer charges, demand charges, and energy charges. The distribution charge includes the highest customer charge (38.35¢ per day) and demand charge (30.85¢ per kW per day), plus an energy charge of 4.29¢ per kWh for the first 200 kWh. The transmission charge adds 30.80¢ per kW per day and 0.56¢ per kWh for both the first and excess 200 kWh. The service charge is 32.86¢ per day.
Large General Electric Rates
Customer, Demand, and Energy Charges by Rate Component
Large general service electricity rates include daily customer charges, demand charges, and an energy charge. The distribution charge has the highest customer charge at 224.64¢ per day, with demand charges of 34.67¢ per kW per day for the first 500 kW and 24.30¢ per kW per day for excess demand. The transmission charge applies demand charges of 37.98¢ per kW per day for the first 500 kW and 46.04¢ per kW per day for excess demand, plus an energy charge of 0.56¢ per kWh. The service charge is 181.04¢ per day and includes a 0.63¢ per kW per day demand charge for excess demand.

Fixed and Variable Charges Over Time
Low-use natural gas rates in northern Alberta were stable at $0.93 per day for the fixed charge and $0.84 per GJ for the variable energy charge from October 2020 through September 2021. The fixed charge increased to $1.00 per day in October 2021, while the variable energy charge rose to $1.59 per GJ in January 2022. The variable energy charge then declined to $0.93 per GJ in January 2023, increased to $1.03 per GJ in January 2024, and was $1.04 per GJ from January through May 2025. Fixed-charge values are not provided after February 2023, so the dataset should not be interpreted as showing a zero fixed charge for later months.
Mid Use Natural Gas Rates (North)
Fixed, Variable Energy, and Transmission Service Charges Over Time
Mid-use natural gas rates in northern Alberta increased between 2023 and 2024. From January through December 2023, rates were $1.77 per day for the fixed charge, $0.97 per GJ for the variable energy charge, and $1.05 per GJ for the transmission service charge. From January through December 2024, these rates rose to $1.91 per day, $1.06 per GJ, and $1.14 per GJ, respectively. From January through May 2025, the fixed charge decreased slightly to $1.90 per day, the variable energy charge remained at $1.06 per GJ, and the transmission service charge increased to $1.17 per GJ.
Large Use Natural Gas Rates (North)
Fixed, Demand, and Transmission Service Charges Over Time
Large-use natural gas rates in northern Alberta changed modestly from 2023 through May 2025. The fixed charge increased from $6.57 per day in 2023 to $7.09 per day in 2024 and $7.21 per day from January to May 2025. Over the same period, the 24-hour demand charge decreased from $0.19 per GJ per day in 2023 to $0.18 per GJ per day in 2024 and remained at that rate through May 2025. The transmission service charge declined from $0.31 per GJ in 2023 to $0.27 per GJ in 2024, then increased slightly to $0.28 per GJ in 2025.

Northeast Coop's gas rate varied substantially between August 2024 and July 2025. The rate was lowest in October 2024 at $1.97 per GJ and rose to its highest level in May 2025 at $3.57 per GJ. After peaking in May 2025, the rate declined to $3.27 per GJ in June and $2.32 per GJ in July 2025. Overall, the July 2025 rate was slightly higher than the $2.22 per GJ rate recorded in August and September 2024.
